Social Bookmarketing By Marisa | October 11th, 2006

Social Bookmarketing: Combination of Social Bookmarking and Marketing. def: Using public online bookmarking to draw more customers toward your content.

First, some definitions.

A web based service where shared lists of user-created Internet bookmarks are displayed.

That means instead of saving bookmarks in your browser that are tied to your specific computer, your bookmarks are saved and in some cases made public, on websites.

Online marketers today, facing increasing advertising avoidance and reliance on word of mouth/word of mouse, must find innovative ways to educated and persuade potential customers. Social bookmarking, a “Web 2.0″ service, is conducive to generating Word of Mouth because it provides a place where individuals can review and tag content and make their opinions public. Over time, a community consensus is built that “x” website is relevant to “y” subject and is considered interesting or worth visiting for whatever reason.

The challenge of social bookmarketing lies in its community-based nature. A cynical and suspicious web audience is quick to spot and ridicule frauds, shills, and spammers. How, then, to seed positive information about your products or services? The answer lies in mining your current customer database.

Identify your customer evangelists - the people who sing your praises to anyone who will listen. Get in touch with them. Send them a little email with insider company news or tips and tricks about maximizing your product’s value. In that email, offer them the opportunity to help spread your message. Make it as easy for them as possible - click this link to tag our product in Del.icio.us; click here to be automatically subscribed to our RSS feed in your favorite RSS reader; etc.

One little note: When I originally wrote this, the domain socialbookmarketing.com was available. I guess I was the first one to think of it. I just checked back - don’t ask me why I didn’t buy it - and someone snatched it. Dang!! Oh well. I can still take comfort in knowing I thought of it first.
