F-Shaped Pattern For Reading Web Content (Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox) By Marisa | April 17th, 2006

Little gem from Jakob Nielsen in my inbox this morning:F-Shaped Pattern For Reading Web Content (Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox)
I’ve seen the eyetracking diagram that shows how users look at search results before, but this article shows two other kinds of pages - an About us page and a product page. Take a look!

If you follow Jakob Nielsen or any other content and usability gurus, the implications are obvious:

  • Users won’t read your text thoroughly in a word-by-word manner.
  • The first two paragraphs must state the most important information.
  • Start subheads, paragraphs, and bullet points with information-carrying words.
