A ‘comment’ about beautiful design By Marisa | March 16th, 2006

Sometimes beautiful design makes me want to cry. When something just works so well you are reduced to a shivering mass in awe of it. You know what I mean. Every now and then I come across something that is just pure internet gorgeousness. Like this:
Akismet

First of all, this isn’t just another pretty site. It’s the site of a company with a great product. Akismet is a comment-spam killer for your blog. Comment spam is when internet nasties come to your blog, pretend to be a person and spew links-laden comments on your blog that link back to their pr0n or gambling websites. The cool thing is Akismet outsmarts the spammers because it takes all the information all of its

  • users feed in, conglomerates it and uses it to create spam rules. In other words, if my house gets hit by a robber and I tell you, your house is now immune to that robber. Neat huh?

But here’s what I like about the design.

    1. One big, pretty, simple, compelling image.
    2. Short, readable text written for people who know what I want to hear.
    3. Fluid, modern design that works in all browsers and all platforms (I assume.)
    4. Nice tagline. Remember the days before spam? Sigh. Honestly, I don’t. I came along after spam was an accepted invasive force on the internet. But it’s nice to wax nostalgic about something I never experienced - the days before spam. Like watching Happy Days or something, but without the nagging feeling that no one in my family would have been allowed to eat at the counter in that place.
    5. The cool little spam zeitgeist telling you the stats about how much spam it’s currently killing for other people, which makes me feel … not quite so alone in this big ole world
    6. Seven links across the top. Maybe that’s one or two more than necessary, but it doesn’t feel overwhelming. I can scan it and know that I probably want the Download link or the FAQ. Or the contact us to suck up to them and try and steal their designer (yeah, like that’s gonna happen.)
    7. One big ole call to action button. It’s friendly. It’s big. It’s bright and pretty. It has a downward-pointing arrow (get it? Download?) I want to click it. In fact I want to bite it, and that’s the highest compliment I give out. Would it be crunchy or creamy underneath? But I digress.
    8. Just noticed this: a rotating image. Like YVOD’s but prettier. So each time I come to the site I’ll see a different but same-feeling picture of blue skies and happy trails.
    9. Short, believable testimonials. Right on the homepage. Like, “don’t believe us? Here’s what our friends say about us.” Maybe two or three more than necessary, but again, not overwhelming.
    10. Making money but not obviously. Free for you and me, but for those folks who are making “mad paper” from their blog (and I love that they define mad paper as 5Bills a month!) they can kick down some cash and perhaps get some extra comment-fighting superhero goodness. I love this. Open source at its best. Free for the people, make the bloodsucking corporations and Moneyed Individuals kick down some cash to support the community. Beautiful.

All right. I’m ready to stop drooling over the site and start using this product. I need to upgrade to the next level of WP - which I’ve been wanting to do anyway since I’ve seen its juicy Ajaxalicious tastiness in action. Hook me up, IT guy!
